New Septic System in New Hampshire
Are you building a home that needs a septic system — or do you have a current property that has one that needs to be replaced? We’re here to help you understand what getting a new septic system in New Hampshire is like. From the process to the cost, we’ll dive into how to ensure you get the best value and a system that will last a generation.
Septic systems are a common need in many smaller communities in New Hampshire. While the state is known for having more freedom and less government oversite than others, we still do have septic system regulations that you have to work through on the state and the city or township level to keep our environment safe. In some instances, you must submit your septic design plans to be approved by the city before sending them on to NHDES. From gaining permits to finding the right engineers, the process can be complicated before starting with the installation on site.
Now, if you, as the homeowner of your primary residence, want to design and install your septic system, you can do so without a permit. But we don’t recommend doing that unless you are fully aware of the process and requirements — and have extensive experience with septic systems.
With the tremendous cost and needs for various homes (depending on your amount of wastewater, people in your dwelling, and usage habits), making a new septic system that will last and not be a health hazard takes experience and precision.
FAQs when needing a new septic system.
Here are some of the most commonly asked questions before starting this project.
How do septic systems work?
Most septic systems consist of a septic tank, a leach field, and a distribution box. The wastewater goes through a process to make it safe to go out to the field.
Your home’s water goes to the septic tank via piping from your home.
It sits there for treatment as the waste solids separate. The organic matter will decompose in the tank and the things that float, like grease or oil, rises to the top. Once the solids have separated, the water (effluent) moves into the distribution box. The sludge that remains is what gets pumped regularly.
The last step is moving to the leaching field through drainage holes. The gravel or aggregate helps the water drain properly, and the soil continues with the secondary treatment to avoid polluting the groundwater.
How much does it cost to install a septic system?
It may surprise you that a septic system can range between $5,000 to $20,000. On average, a new septic system design to installation runs around $12,000 for us in the Granite State.
How long do septic systems last in NH?
The good news is that the lifetime of a septic system averages 25 years, but we’ve seen some of our systems last well over 50 years. If you want your new septic system to last, there are three things you need —
1. A proper design that was built to withstand the everyday load your household puts on the system.
2. A generous amount of aggregate in the leach field to aid in drainage.
3. Thorough service performed regularly — at least every 2-3 years.
When you care for your system properly, you can expect to see your system last a while. Some things you can do to help are —
Conserve water use by limiting your use and installing things like low-flow shower heads and toilets.
Repair water leaks as soon as possible.
Keep paint and chemicals as well as grease and food waste away from your system. They can destroy the microbes in your system that keep it at optimal function.
Do not allow cars or heavy equipment to move over the leach field.
Only allow grass over the disposal field — never bushes, flowers, asphalt, or concrete.
